How to Build a Simple Monthly Budget You Can Actually Keep

A budget does not need a complicated spreadsheet. The goal is to know where your money goes so you can decide where it should go. Here is a simple approach for renters and anyone living on a tight month-to-month plan.

Step 1: Write down your income

Use what actually lands in your account each month. If your income varies, base the plan on a conservative average.

Step 2: List your fixed costs

Rent, utilities, insurance, phone, internet and minimum debt payments come first. These are the bills that are due whether or not you feel like paying them.

Step 3: Pay yourself first

Decide on a savings amount, even a small one, and move it as soon as you are paid. Saving what is left at the end of the month rarely works.

Step 4: Plan flexible spending

  • Groceries
  • Transport
  • Eating out and entertainment
  • Household items

Give each category a number. Round figures are fine; you can adjust after the first month.

Step 5: Review once a month

Compare plan and reality, then change the categories that did not work. A budget is a living document, not a test you pass or fail.

If you only do one thing, track your spending for a single month. Seeing the real numbers is usually the most useful part.
