How to Plan a Weekend Trip on a Budget
A weekend trip is a good way to get away without spending much time or money. With a little planning, you can keep costs under control and still enjoy the trip.
Set your budget first
Decide the total you can spend, then split it into transport, lodging, food, activities and a small buffer. Knowing the limit before you search keeps you from choosing options you cannot afford.
Choose a nearby destination
Transport is often the largest cost of a short trip. A destination you can reach by car, bus or train in a few hours leaves more time and money for the trip itself. Look for places that offer free or low-cost activities, such as parks, markets and walking tours.
Pick your dates carefully
Travel prices are usually lower on weekdays and outside holidays and local events. If your schedule is flexible, compare a few dates and choose the cheapest.
Save on lodging
- Compare hotels, hostels and rentals, and check the total price including fees
- Look at options a little outside the center, near public transport
- Check the cancellation policy before you book
- Ask whether breakfast is included
Keep food costs down
Eat one or two meals a day at local, casual places and prepare snacks or a picnic. Bring a refillable water bottle. A kitchen in your lodging can also reduce costs.
Plan activities in advance
List two or three things you really want to do and check their opening hours and prices. Leave some free time so the trip does not feel rushed.
Pack light
A single carry-on avoids baggage fees and speeds up your trip. Our guide on how to pack a carry-on for a one-week trip works just as well for a weekend.
Prepare your home
Before you leave, lock up and follow the steps in our guide on how to keep your home secure while you travel.
A weekend trip does not need to be expensive to be enjoyable. A clear budget, flexible dates and a short list of priorities make it easy to enjoy it without stress.
