A week away fits in one carry-on if you plan before you pack. Traveling light saves checked-bag fees and time, and it keeps you flexible.
Check the rules first
Airlines set their own size and weight limits for carry-on bags, and liquids usually have to follow security rules. Check your airline's current policy before you pack.
Build around a small color palette
Pick two or three colors that go together so tops and bottoms can be mixed. Aim for around five tops, two or three bottoms and one layer for cooler weather, adjusted for your destination.
Pack in a smart order
- Heavier items near the wheels or the bottom of the bag
- Shoes at the bottom or in a bag, with socks tucked inside
- Clothes rolled or folded flat, whichever keeps them neat for you
- Toiletries in a clear bag at the top for security
Keep essentials reachable
Documents, chargers, medication and anything valuable belong in a personal item you keep with you, not in the overhead bin.
Plan for laundry
If you will be away a week or more, a quick wash in the sink or a laundry stop lets you pack less.
Lay everything out on the bed first, then remove a quarter of it. You will probably not miss it.
Gear that helps
Packing cubes keep a carry-on organized, and a bag that meets your airline’s size limit saves stress at the gate. You can browse packing cubes and carry-on bags on Amazon.
