How to Spot Real Black Friday Deals (and Skip the Fake Ones)

Black Friday is full of big red numbers, but a large percentage off does not always mean a good price. Some products are listed at an inflated price for weeks so the discount looks bigger. A few simple checks help you separate real deals from marketing.

Know the normal price first

Before the sales start, note the usual price of the items you want. Check the price a few weeks earlier, and use a price-tracking tool or browser extension if you like. A deal is only a deal compared to what the item normally costs.

Compare the total cost

  • Shipping fees and delivery times
  • Taxes and any extra fees at checkout
  • Accessories or subscriptions you need to make the product work
  • Warranty and who handles repairs

Watch for common tricks

  • A crossed-out price that was never charged
  • Limited-time countdowns that reset
  • Older models sold as the latest version
  • Bundles that add items you do not need

Check the return policy

Holiday purchases often have extended return windows, but not always. Read the policy before you pay, and keep the receipt and packaging until you are sure you will keep the item.

Use a simple checklist

  • Is this something I already planned to buy?
  • Is the price lower than the usual price over the past weeks?
  • Is the seller reputable, and are the reviews recent?
  • Can I return it if it is not right?

If you answer no to most of these, wait. There will be another sale. Our Black Friday shopping plan and price comparison checklist go into more detail.
