How to Declutter a Small Apartment in One Weekend
A small apartment fills up quickly. Decluttering in one weekend is realistic if you work in a clear order and decide fast.
Before you start
Gather bags or boxes for donate, recycle, trash and keep. Set a start and end time for each day so the task does not drag on.
Saturday: sort by category
- Start with clothes, then books, paper and kitchen items
- Take everything out before deciding
- Keep what you use and what you truly like
- Move anything that belongs elsewhere right away
Make quick decisions
If you have not used something in a long time and have no clear plan for it, it can probably go. For sentimental items, keep a small box rather than everything.
Sunday: organize what stays
Give every item a place. Use baskets, shelves, hooks and under-bed boxes to keep surfaces clear. Freestanding and removable storage is best for rentals.
Deal with the donate pile
Drop it off the same day or schedule a pickup. Items that stay in the hallway for weeks tend to come back into the house.
Keep it from coming back
- Use a one-in, one-out rule for new items
- Do a ten-minute reset each evening
- Review storage areas every few months
