Starting a blog is easier than it looks. You do not need to know how to code, and you can have a simple site online in an afternoon. What takes time is writing useful posts consistently, so it helps to set things up properly from the start.

1. Pick a topic you can keep writing about

A blog about everything is hard to grow. Choose a topic you know something about, that you enjoy, and that other people search for. Make a list of 20 questions a reader might ask about it. If you can easily answer most of them, the topic is likely broad enough to sustain a blog.

2. Choose a name and a domain

Your domain is your address on the web, such as yourblog.com. Keep it short, easy to spell and easy to say out loud. Avoid hyphens and numbers, and check that the name is not already used by another brand or social media account.

3. Choose web hosting

Hosting is the service that stores your site and makes it available to visitors. For a new blog, a shared hosting plan with one-click WordPress installation is usually enough. If you want to compare options first, read our checklist on what to look for in web hosting.

Hostinger is the hosting provider we use for this site. You can check current Hostinger plans here and compare them against your needs before you decide.

4. Install WordPress

WordPress is the most widely used system for building blogs. Most hosting providers let you install it from the control panel in a few clicks. Once it is installed, log in to the dashboard, set your site title and tagline, and choose a permalink structure that includes the post name.

5. Pick a theme and keep plugins minimal

Choose a lightweight theme with a clean layout that works well on phones. Then add only the plugins you really need, such as one for SEO, one for backups and one for security. Every extra plugin is something you have to update and that can slow the site down.

6. Create the essential pages

  • About: who you are and what the blog covers
  • Contact: a simple way for readers to reach you
  • Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy: required if you use analytics or ads
  • Affiliate Disclosure: needed if you ever link to products you earn commissions on

7. Write your first posts

Start with three to five posts that answer real questions in your topic. Use a clear title, short paragraphs and descriptive headings. Add a relevant image with alt text, and link to your other posts when it helps the reader.

8. Learn the SEO basics

Search engines favor pages that answer a question clearly. For each post, choose one main keyword, use it naturally in the title and the first paragraph, and write a short meta description that tells people what they will get. Do not repeat the keyword unnaturally.

9. Be patient and keep a schedule

New blogs usually take months to gain traffic. A realistic schedule, such as one or two quality posts a week, is better than a burst of posts followed by silence. Review what is working every month and write more about it.

With a clear topic, a simple setup and steady publishing, a new blog can grow into something genuinely useful for its readers.
